Daniel and Eve, along with our first-time studio audience of one, saw Star Trek in the theater last week, so we’re sharing some initial reactions. This is far from a thorough review.

We thoroughly enjoyed this movie! We try to keep the spoilers to a minimum.

  • Kirk’s family situation made it harder to be raised.
  • Is there anything in Iowa? Call (903) 231-2221 or email feedback@AreYouJustWatching.com to let us know.
  • Police officer calls someone “citizen.” Is this similar to the communist title of “comrade”?
  • In Spock’s training, we may have heard a new immortal phrase, “It is morally praiseworthy but not morally obligatory.”
  • Kirk is capable of choosing his destiny.
  • There’s a small reference, and some other fun references to .
  • Kirk is “meant for something better.” Does he have a personal drive rather than being led by the wind?
  • Rumulans and Vulcans share a “common ancestor”β€”hint of evolution or just a past culture split? Daniel thinks it’s evolutionary, Eve thinks it’s cultural.
  • Spock’s father tells him to “put aside logic and do what feels right.”

In this short episode, Daniel forgot to mention that there is one scene of immodesty that the movie could have done without. Thankfully, the audio wasn’t explicit, but Daniel chose to avert his eyes anyway.

May I make one suggestion? If you are going to review a movie, even initial reactions to it, you obviously have to talk about the movie in specific ways. And since you have it in the title that it is Star Trek (in this case), people should understand that you are going to have spoilers big time. Otherwise, you cannot really discuss it in depth from a Christian viewpoint, which as I understand it, is what this blog is about.

So how about just giving one single disclaimer at the beginning. "This episode is an in-depth look at ______; if you haven&#039t seen it yet, you might want to save this until after you have, because it is going to contain many spoilers."

Otherwise all you can really say is "I liked/didn&#039t like it. Or some general things like "it included profanity or immorality." You won&#039t be able to support that with examples. The podcast will be over in five minutes. I&#039m guessing that your listeners are like me, in that we actually want to hear the movie discussed in detail. πŸ™‚

  2. Thank you for the excellent suggestion, Peggy. Actually, someone else had suggested the same thing, which we realized was much better for us to do, just like you also said. So that&#039s exactly what we did in our latest Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen initial reactions. We said upfront (and mention in the shownotes), that our discussion and shownotes would contain spoilers. Just like you and our other listener said, this certainly opened up the conversation for us to discuss aspects we otherwise wouldn&#039t be able to discuss. However, we really can&#039t do a full episode until the movie is on DVD.

    Thanks for listening!

It has been well-established in the Trek universe that this is a cultural split. Romulans are a group of Vulcans who, in ancient times, wished to keep their emotions and not embrace the logical way. They were exiled by a culture that embraced logic, leaving the planet and eventually founding Romulus. (their telepathic skills also atrophied).

    Just as an FYI. πŸ™‚
