About

Are You Just Watching?™ is about critical thinking for Christians as they watch popular media such as movies and TV shows. We are more than a Christian reviews site since PluggedIn Online already does such a wonderful job. We take a critical look at philosophies and ideas behind and promoted by entertainment media, and then discuss these based on a biblical worldview. For example, the evolutionism in Jurassic Park, the user-program relationship in Tron, or the messianic characteristics of Neo in the Matrix trilogy. Each conversation has one end-objective in mind, that you don’t just watch, but also think and learn.

I’m an avid reader and movie lover. There’s not much I like better than reading a book and then seeing the movie version, or watching a movie and then reading the novelization. I have a degree in English literature, which means that at some point in my life I actually received grades for discussing and writing essays about literature. Can’t get much better than that, right? Well, it can. Who needs to pull apart the deep inner workings of dusty old classics when there’s such wonderful fodder in the mass media that people watch (and read) everyday?

Above all, I believe that I can’t do much better in this life than in pointing my friends toward a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Everything makes perfect sense when viewed from a Christian worldview. Even when the intent of the writer was something entirely different, everything can point to our Creator God. He is the foundation for every logical thought, the judge of all evil, and the author of all beauty.

I am a disciple of the Christ, husband of one, father of four, veteran of the United States Army and geek to the very core. I remember some of the 1970s try hard to forget much of the 1980s. My days are spent working as a Cisco technician in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and too many nights to be healthy in the clutches of a good story, regardless of the delivery method.

If I can ever muster up the discipline necessary to put in all the extra work, I’ve got a couple different books that I am working on and hope to see published some day. I am a strong believer that stories can be a wonderful tool to help lead the pre-Christian to Christ, and pray that the work we do here and elsewhere, will bring Glory to God.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24)

As an award-winning podcaster, I help others launch and improve their own podcasts for sharing their passions and finding success. I create training resources and podcasting tools (like My Podcast Reviews); offer one-on-one consulting; am a keynote speaker on podcasting and social media; and I host a network of award-nominated shows covering how to podcast, clean-comedy, and the #1 unofficial podcast for ABC’s hit drama Once Upon a Time.

Due to these other commitments, I am no longer available to cohost Are You Just Watching? but you can enjoy my contributions in the early episodes.
