The Sixth Sense movie posterEpisode lucky-number-13 is the second part of our discussion on the movie The Sixth Sense.

The spiritual realm

Is the spiritual realm real?

Do you know why you’re afraid when you’re alone?

Be real still. Sometimes you feel it inside, like you’re falling down real fast, but you’re really just standing still. You ever feel the prickly things on the back of your neck, and the tiny hairs on your arm, you know when they stand up? That’s them. When they get mad, it gets cold.

Dead people affecting us

According to The Sixth Sense, spirits of the dead affect the physical world. According to the Bible, there
is a real spiritual realm.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of thisdarkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Ephesians 6:10–13

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1

The Bible details various ways in which the spiritual world touches interacts with our physical existence—such
as demonic possession, spirits influencing people, and spiritual warfare.

In the story of the rich man and Lazarus recorded in Luke 16:19–31, there is a description given of
the place where souls are kept and that those souls cannot freely walk the earth. But there is one
passage in the Bible where the spirits of dead people walk about among the living:

The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and
coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. (Matthew
27:52–53)

But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep,
lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even
so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 4:13–14, NKJV)

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel
and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring
lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences
of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. (1 Peter 5:8–9)

Dead people tell no tales

Cole gets information from the dead people, but in the Bible, we are told different. If you are getting
information from a spiritual source, it’s not from dead people.

For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more
reward, For the memory of them is forgotten. (Ecclesiastes 9:5)

And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment. (Hebrews
9:27)

My eye has wasted away because of affliction;
I have called upon You every day, O LORD;
I have spread out my hands to You.
Will You perform wonders for the dead?
Will the departed spirits rise and praise You? (Psalm 88:9–10)

God does not provide miracles for the dead. There is no second chance after death. The dead can’t
rise up and change their minds and praise God. But in The Sixth Sense, they are walking about. If such dead
people have free will and still have the ability to see, understand, and even learn things, could one
of the dead people still receive salvation? Malcolm seems to move on to something at the end of the
movie after “helping
someone”—where does he go?

I think I can go now. Just needed to do a couple things. Needed to help someone. Think I did. And I needed to tell you something. You were never second, ever. I love you. You sleep now. Everything will be different in the morning.

What’s after death?

Secular entertainment cannot explain what a person has to do to be eligible of moving on “into the
light.” We know as Christians that there is nothing we can do to pay our debt, only Christ can take it
upon Himself.

And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! 18 Then also
those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ,
we are of all men the most pitiable. (1 Corinthians 15:17–19, NKJV)

But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put
on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. “O
DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” The sting of death is sin, and the power
of sin is the law. (1 Corinthians 15:54–56)

Protection against spiritual forces

The Bible not only warns us about spiritual forces, but it also tells us how to protect ourselves, such as with the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6).

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as
the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions
of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast
them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. (Matthew 10:1)

“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and
finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds
it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked
than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
So shall it also be with this wicked generation.” (Matthew 12:43–45, NKJV)

The encouragement is that as Christians, we are “more than conquerors” and if God granted us the ability to see into the spiritual realm, it would not be a scary place, but a realm that is controlled by God.
